Abbreviations
Cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP)
Synonyms
Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP): Term no longer in use
Idiopathic bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia: Term no longer in use
Definitions
Idiopathic interstitial pneumonia
1.8-13% of all interstitial lung diseases
Clinical pathological entity without known cause, histologically characterized by organizing pneumonia (OP)
OP: Buds of granulation tissue (i.e., Masson bodies) within lumina of distal pulmonary airspaces
Masson bodies: Fibroblasts and myofibroblasts intermixed with loose connective matrix
OP may be idiopathic (COP), may occur as reaction to lung injury, or may be associated with other pulmonary conditions
Similar clinical and radiologic findings in patients with COP and secondary OP
