TERMINOLOGY
Synonyms
Tendon rupture, tendon tear, tendon sprain, tendon strain
Tendon sprain and strain are clinical rather than imaging terms used to describe partial-thickness tendon tears
Definitions
Tendon tear = discontinuity either within tendon substance or at attachment
Partial-thickness tear: Some of tendon fibers are torn, but this does not involve full thickness of tendon
Full-thickness tear: Some of tendon fibers are torn, and this does involve full thickness of tendon
Complete tear: All of tendon fibers are torn
High-grade partial tear: Partial tendon tear involving > 50% of tendon fibers
